Eucalyptus is an enormous and fascinating genus. It comprises over 700 species, and accounts for more than two-thirds of Australia's vegetation. It is unfortunate that they are frequently regarded as not being reliably hardy outside of the subtropics, because it discourages people from planting them in cooler areas. There are many reasons to plant a eucalyptus--to begin with, they help to control aphids and other insects, most of them will grow rapidly, even in poor soil (12' per year is not out of the question), and most of them are very attractive--eucalyptus have a beauty all their own. And eucalyptus foliage, which shows incredible variety, is excellent for cut foliage in floral arrangements. Unless it is to be grown as a pot plant for its entire life (more on that below), a eucalyptus seedling must be planted as soon as possible, before too many roots reach the edges and bottom of its pot. Eucalyptus ought to be planted when they are no more than 8 - 14 inches in height. This tree is a native of Australia, but nowadays it is popular in European and American ornamental gardens. The foliage has an attractive silvery-bluish colour and a fine, aromatic fragrance which keeps gnats at bay. Growth is extremely rapid. Culture: Sun or part shade. Hardy in zones 7-10. Can also be grown as a patio plant, outdoors in the summer, indoors in the winter. Uses: Ornamental plantings, hedges or windbreaks, shade trees, firewood, cut flowers, foliage and fruits, frost-resistant plant. Definitely one you should have!

CULTIVATION ADVICE: If conditions are cool, the soil is not particularly fertile, if the plant is sown too early in the spring, and/or the plant is not getting enough light, it will run very quickly to flower. This is one of the characteristics of "kapoor." To grow large, full, vibrant plants, start by sowing the seed directly in the garden, late in the spring, when the soil has truly warmed up. Or start early in pots, but give plenty of compost, light, and a large pot. Sow by sprinkling seed generously on surface of potting soil in pots or by seeding directly in the garden. Once the seedlings attain their second set of true leaves, thin or transplant to 1 foot apart. If the central leader runs right up to flower, pinch it back to encourage bushy growth.If you live in the temperate north, grow as an annual or bring indoors for the winter. Plant prefers full sun and will survive roadside conditions although regular watering and softer soils are certainly appreciated.

Calendula is an annual or short-lived herbaceous perennial growing from 1 to 3 feet tall. Calendula makes flowers of orange or yellow, with single rows of petals or "doubles" which some say glow like the sun. Wild calendula is easy to grow from wildflower seed, and makes good color in a meadow setting. Often reblooms late in fall and is somewhat frost-tolerant. Calendula grows quickly, blooms heavily, and then dies with the first heavy frost. It will grow in all regions of North America. Calendula likes a shallow covering for good wild flower seed germination. - Calendula contains high amounts of flavonoids which are plant-based antioxidants that protect the body against cell-damaging free radicals. Researchers are not sure what active ingredients in calendula are responsible for its healing properties, but it appears to have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. This allows calendula to be used externally for its antiseptic and healing properties in treating skin infections, cuts, punctures, scrapes, burns and chapped or chafed skin or lips. The tea or the tincture in water can be swished and swallowed in order to help heal oral lesions, sore throat, or gastric ulcer. Calendula has a good history of external use in the treatment of varicose veins. The fresh flowers are masticated, reduced to a paste with water in a blender, or rubbed directly onto affected areas. The dried flowers are best made into an aromatic infused oil, tea, or tincture. This makes calendula one of the more unusual wild flower seeds we offer.
